http://www.kids.gov is the official web portal of the U.S. Government for kids. It links to over 1,200 web pages from government agencies, schools, and educational organizations, all geared to the learning level and interest of kids. The sites are divided into two age groups: k-5 and 6-8. The site also includes a section for educators which includes links to helpful lesson plans, classroom activities and web resources. A link to this page will be added to the “Government Resources” pages for both the Elementary and MS Media Centers.

- The Online Books Page, lists over 25,000 free books, and even offers an RSS feed to help you keep up-to-date on what is offered.
- The Digital Book Index, contains over 137,000 titles with about 97,000 of them available for free.
- There are even free books available online for kids … The International Children’s Digital Library. All of the content is free, available in several languages and looks good.

For several years now we have subscribed to the World Book Encyclopedia online … this year our subscription was upgraded (at no extra cost to us) to the advanced version. This is an excellent site for you to have your students use when doing research. The site not only includes the encyclopedia, but also an atlas and dictionary, as well as a resource guide to “Explore Michigan” and “Explore the World”. Users can create an account and save their research for later access, have the site help them build their citations, and view primary sources. The home page even has a section listing the headlines for the day. This resource can be accessed by going to the Media Center page for any of our buildings, and clicking on the World Book Logo.
